Buckling

Buckling is a visible distortion or waviness in the horizontal lines of shingles, and usually can run in a straight line up the roof slope. This wear causes shingle tabs to become more vulnerable to being torn off or further damaged when exposed to faster winds. Very often, the problem is caused by warping in the roof deck, which is a result of poor attic ventilation. Improper materials being used for the roof deck is also a common cause.

Bare Spots

Over time, the ashphalt in which the shingles protective granules are embedded, begins to harden, causing these important granules to wear off. Bare spots are often accompanied by fine fissures on the shingle's surface. Accumulation of granules in the gutters is a sign that a roof inspection may be a good idea.

Curling

The upward curling of shingle tabs makes them highly susceptible to wind and ice damage. This is a problem on older roofs where moisture build up in the attic affects the under side of the shingle.
